Thonon-les-Bains is found on the shores of Lake Geneva and is the second most populated town in Haute-Savoie. Its current reputation is based on a growing economic dynamic, peaceful living environment and a dream location at the foot of the most beautiful mountains in Europe. The mountains and lake offer a range of different activities throughout the year. In the summer the lakeside is a hiker’s dream, and the water offers the chance to go swimming or take a day trip out on a boat and try out some water sports. In the winter you can also go skiing as you will not be too far from the Portes du Soleil, the second-largest ski resort in the world.
In Thonon les Bains you can take a ride on the Funicular. Dating back to 1888, the Funicular trundles 46 metres up the slope from Quai de Rives to the upper part of town. The thing that sets it apart from every other funicular in the world, is that the track curves to the top rather than running in a straight line.
When in Thonon you can visit the Musee du Chablais. Right at the heart of the belvederes is the 17th century Chateau de Sonnaz, which is the museum about the historic Chabalais Province.
Due to Thonon being right on the shores of Lake Geneva, you can spend the summer days on the beaches here enjoying the sunshine. You can go swimming in the clear still water of the lake or also hire some kayaks and go exploring.
July is the warmest month of the year. The temperature in July averages 19.1 °C. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 1.1 °C. On average, there are 89.71 hours of sunshine per month.
From Geneva International Airport, the drive to Thonon les Bains is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
