It may come as a surprise to some that Les Sybelles is the fourth largest linked ski area in France. Created in 2003 thanks to visionary Gaston Maulin, this picturesque area the heart of the Maurienne Valley is made up of 310km of linked pistes, which is 10km larger than the much loved Espace Killy. Still relatively untouched by the Brits, this area is made up of 6 ski-in ski-out resorts – La Toussuire, Le Corbier, Les Bottieres, St. Colomban des Villards, St. Jean d’Arves and St. Sorlin d’Arves.
The main draw of this ski area – besides its sheer size – is the accessibility of the slopes in Les Sybelles. The best form of transport is on your skis and there is rarely the need to get in your car or take a bus. If you do wish to jump in the car though, you will benefit from the area’s proximity to Orelle, a small resort which is linked by gondola to the Three Valleys.
The villages within Les Sybelles are traditionally French, with a number of excellent Savoyard restaurants and chalet-style après bars. There are new developments planned in Les Sybelles, so it is an area well worth keeping an eye on.
Among the six resorts that make up Les Sybelles, two of them are purpose built; La Toussuire and Le Corbier were both built in the 60s whilst the other four resorts are more traditional villages with a typical Savoyard spirit. From each of them you will be able to enjoy an amazing view on the famous Aiguilles d’Arves. Wherever you decide to stay you will have a direct access to the ski area of Les Sybelles and its 310km of runs. The resorts are perfect for beginners and intermediates as there are lots of gentle slopes where you can easily learn how to master the art of skiing or snowboarding. Speaking of snowboarders, but also freestyle lovers, the area has 2 snowparks located at the foot of the Ouillon, one designed for beginners. Ouillon is the point where all six ski areas join to make one big skiing playground. The highest point is Les Perrons at 2620m of altitude located on St Sorlin D’Arves area.
You can go cross-country skiing; there are 33km of slopes to enjoy in the area. Other sports activities are available such as ice skating, snowshoe hiking, sledging, dog sledging, paragliding, or speed riding. Or you can simply relax at the pool or at the spa.
Being located in the Maurienne Valley, which is the biggest cycle area in the world, every cycling fanatic will find this place to be a paradise. Apart from cycling there are other activities available; climbing, hiking, relaxing by a lake, or just sightseeing and visiting the area. There is something for everyone in the mountains.
During winter lots of shows and events are organised for tourists but also locals. Concerts, sports events, and themed activities will keep you amused during your stay.
