Les Contamines-Montjoie is a traditional mountain village nestled right at the base of Mont Blanc. The Les Contamines ski resort has been developed in a way that it lunges almost 5 km along the valley, interlinked by footpaths criss-crossing the village and allowing relatively easy access to each of the little hamlets. To reduce car travel, Contamines Montjoie set up a shuttle bus service to get around the village and to also get to the bottom of the ski lifts. If bus travel isn’t for you, there are also horse-drawn carriages which can take visitors to the bottom of the slopes, stopping off for a snack on the way! The ski resort of Les Contamines / Hauteluce enjoys an exceptional amount of sunny weather and natural snow on both sides of its two major valleys, the Val Montjoie and the Beaufortain. The ski slopes meander down through each of the valleys, wide ski runs, surrounded by ancient forests, high altitude cabins and mountain farms
Contamines-Montjoie offers lots of other activities other than skiing and snowboarding. You can still explore the mountains along the numerous walking trails put in place, and if you want to go further off-piste you can hire snowshoes to make the walk easier. The resort also offers parapenting if you want an alternative way to take in the mountain views and fresh air. Being a traditional alpine village, there are lots of shops and restaurants to visit and experience local produce from.
Confident skiers who value the purity of a back-to-nature mountain environment and a dramatic setting for their skiing experience. It’s friendly and, although in the heart of Massif du Mont-Blanc, has a refreshingly tucked-away feel. Which is why, if you want to explore the full extent of the Evasion Mont-Blanc lift pass, you’ll have to factor in transfers by road at the start and end of each day. But if you’re happy to stay put and explore the local terrain in depth, then chances are you won’t be disappointed. Despite the image, the gentle beginner areas and choice of ski-schools (which offer English-speaking instructors) make learning here perfectly possible, and there’s lots of scope for improving intermediates.
Its snow record is reliable and as most of the slopes are above 1800m and face north and north-east, they retain their snow when other nearby resorts are suffering. The resort also has 210 snow canons to make artificial snow when needed.
The resort is just 1hr from Geneva, 1hr 10 mins from Chambery, and 1hr 50 mins from Grenoble.
