Vars is one of the unavoidable stops on the Route des Vars. The village has access to the Alps where you can appreciate the mountain and all it has to offer and its adventures. In Vars there are plenty of activities to do for the whole family, including 200 km of hiking trails to explore, 100 km of bike trails accessible by lifts, multitude of activities for the young and old, and the nature reserve of Val d’Escreins (one of the most beautiful sceneries of the Alps).
Vars consists of 4 mountain hamlets that stretch along the Grandes Alpes road. The village has managed to combine the authenticity and charm of the traditional villages with the comfort of a large, modern winter sports resort. Its natural heritage and its mountain temperament make Vars a privileged place to stay.
Vars is only 3 hours from Marseille and 4 hours from Lyon, making it very accessible.
Like many ski resorts, Vars is keen in promoting the less automated side of snow sports. Both snowshoeing and winter hiking are both popular here, and you can choose to do this with or without a guide. If you want a less exerting way to get around the mountain, then you can book onto a dog sledding tour.
In the village, there is lots to do after a big day on the pistes. You can walk around the village a visit the many traditional shops and restaurants here. There is also an ice ring and cinema, which might appeal to you if you have young children.
Vars sits in the same valley as Risoul, either side of a peak, and each have further slopes rising up on both sides of the valley floor. In Vars – Vars-les-Claux, to give it its full name – the wooded Peynier sector is the smaller area of runs – a mix of mostly blues and red with one easy black. The main gondola rises up the east-facing slopes from the resort to provide the primary link with Risoul and here also are the main slopes – again a good mix of quite long reds and easy, cruising blues.
The signature Vars run is the Olympique red that drops 920 m from La Mayt down to the smaller outlying village of Vars-Ste-Marie. You can also reach this hamlet via a pleasant blue.
Although Vars has a southerly location, the resort receives an average of 2.5 metres each season as well as its main Le Claux villages and the top pistes situated at 2750 m above sea level. Its lower runs are also covered by snow making machines.
