On your Vaujany ski holiday, you’ll find the resort presents quite an unusual prospect for those who are veterans of numerous ski resorts! It’s a small village, linked to a huge French ski area. That in itself is not unique, but the fact that there are no pistes back to it, and a huge 160-person cable car is a rather more unusual prospect.
The village remains quite small, with a year-round population of a little over 300 and not too much accommodation, it has only 2,000 guest beds (which compares to over 32,000 at Alpe d’Huez above). It works hard to maintain its character and heritage with an onus on traditions, but it is growing quite rapidly, thankfully with mostly tasteful, high-quality developments of spacious modern apartments.
Vaujany has both on-snow and off-snow to take part in if you want to take a break from the skiing or snowboarding. You can rent some snowshoes and explore the mountain and visit new places, or you can have a go at the toboggan run and enjoy a high-speed descent.
There are also plenty of off-snow activities found in the village. There are sports activities such as table tennis, swimming and even curling. There are also more relaxing and family-based activities like bowling and visiting the cinema. You can also visit the local museum while strolling around the village centre and browsing all the shops and restaurants.
The compact ski area of Montfrais 1650, just above the hamlet of La Villette further up the valley from Vaujany, serves as Vaujany’s local ski area, with around 53 km of runs. It’s linked with the village by a valley-hugging gondola. Vaujany’s nearest slopes are tucked away down on the valley floor well below the village, in a peaceful little dell next to the hamlet of l’Enversin d’Oz; here there’s just a tiny beginners’ zone, alongside the finish area for Vaujany’s sole ‘home run’ piste, the thigh-burning La Fare black run.
The ski season runs from December to April and all the runs are incredibly well maintained, with ski cannons used during persistent dry spells.
The closest airport to Vaujany is Grenoble, which is around 90 minutes away by car.
